On October 16, 2008, Canwest (Canwest Global Communications Corporation) announced that it had commissioned Prodigy Pictures Inc. to produce a pilot for Lost Girl, a "drama about a young woman with supernatural powers...."[1] Based on an idea by Jay Firestone, the teleplay was written by Michelle Lovretta, who had previously been a writer on the Canadian television series Mutant X and wrote the television movie To Be Fat Like Me, with filming directed by John Fawcett. Principal photography for the pilot was completed on February 18, 2009.[2]

2009

On August 13, 2009, Canwest issued a press release announcing that it had given the green-light for a 13-episode, one-hour fantasy and action series to air on the Showcase channel (a subsidiary of Canwest Broadcasting) in 2010:

"Lost Girl is so unique in that it weaves an array of genres – fantasy, romance, action – all the while developing these complicated, intelligent characters and rich storylines. We can't wait to get started producing this bold and fun series, ... With one of the hottest and most dynamic casts coming to television and an exceptional creative team, Showcase viewers can look forward to a sophisticated series chock-full of action-packed twists and turns laced with chemistry-fuelled relationships. Lost Girl will also offer a cross platform experience to viewers. Production is currently underway on the development of an interactive website, graphic novel and downloadable video game."[3]

While the pilot was shot in Hamilton, Ontario (Canada), location shooting and production was to predominantly take place in Toronto and Etobicoke, Ontario.[4][5]

Showcase (Canwest) tweet
June 2010

On April 6, 2010, Prodigy Pictures and Canwest reported that:

"principal photography is underway for 13 one-hour episodes of the new original Canadian fantasy-noir series, Lost Girl. Filming will take place at a West Toronto soundstage and on location in the vicinities of Toronto and Hamilton until June 25, 2010. The series is set to air on Showcase in the fall.  Lost Girl follows supernatural seductress Bo (Anna Silk: Being Erica; Billable Hours), a Succubus who feeds on the sexual energy of mortals. Growing up with human parents, Bo had no reason to believe she was anything other than the girl next door – until she drained her boyfriend to death in their first sexual encounter. Now she has hit the road alone and afraid. She discovers she is one of the Fae, creatures of legend and folklore, who pass as humans while feeding off them in secret, as they have for millennia. Relieved yet horrified to find out that she is not alone, Bo decides to take the middle path between the humans and the Fae while embarking on a personal mission to unlock the secrets of her origin.  Bo's succubus nature tangles her in a sexy, romantic love-triangle with Dyson (Kris Holden-Reid: Ben Hur, The Bridge; The Tudors), a shape-shifting Fae and homicide detective, and Lauren (Zoie Palmer: The Guard; Instant Star), a human doctor who has found a way through science to help give Bo the sexual self-control she’s been aching for. Navigating this complicated life with Bo is her human confidante and street-smart survivor, Kenzi (Ksenia Solo: Life Unexpected; Renegadepress.com)."[6]

On June 22, 2010, Keyframe Digital Productions announced that it was producing the visual effects on thirteen episodes of Lost Girl.[7][8]

Toronto LGBT Film Festival 2014

Lost Girl was the subject of a panel at the 2014 Film & History Conference on October 30, 2014. ("Film & History" is an Affiliated Society of the American Historical Association (AHA) and publishes "Film & History: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Film and Television Studies".) Hosted by the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the conference topic for 2014 was "Golden Ages: Styles & Personalities, Genres & Histories".[112][113]

Prompted by a Twitter message from the Writers Guild of Canada asking their followers what Canadian show they would fight for, Canadian television media website TV, eh? featured a one-week online poll of the same question. Lost Girl won by 46% (out of 12,618 voters).[114]

Instead of demolition, two key sets from the series, a bar (The Dal) and a room in a house (Bo's living room), were donated to Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, to be assembled on its Brantford (Ontario) campus, for faculty and student use in the university's Game Design and Development program.[115][116]

The DVD of Season 5 was released first in the United Kingdom on January 25, 2016, by Sony Pictures Home Entertainment as "The Complete Final Season".[117] On February 11, 2016, the DVD was released in Australia by Universal Sony Pictures Home Entertainment as "The Complete Fifth Season".[118] The DVD and Blu-ray was released in Canada and the United States by Giant Ape Media on March 22, 2016, with the title "The Final Chapters – Seasons Five & Six" [119] (even though there was no "Season Six").

Because Season 5 was divided and broadcast as two parts by Showcase, some third-party television service providers incorrectly referred to the rerun of the second half (episodes 5.09 – 5.16) as "Season 6".

"In the beginning, the only difference that we sort of recalibrated a bit was that we were darker at first. If you see episode eight of season one, that was actually our pilot. When we were in development, the request was that I write a sample episode, so I sort of imagined a place that was interesting and wrote it….What we looked at more was exploring the heart and the friendship and some fun. The next one that we wrote was episode three of season one, which was to say how light we could go. That was our two poles. We’re always existing between those two in terms of tone…." – Michelle Lovretta

"A show built around a bisexual lead doesn't have to BE about her bisexuality — orientation can just be an interesting element of a story, and not the story itself, and that's the central spirit of our show....It's also rare to have a female lead who is so honestly sexual, without judgment....I think the single element I will remain proudest of is just that we've been able to create and put out into the world a sex positive universe where a person's sexual orientation is unapologetically present and yet neither defines them as a character, nor the show as a whole." – Michelle Lovretta

Lost Girl program specials

Season 2 Finale Pre-Show (3)

Lost Girl Finale Pre-Show

Lost Girl Finale Pre-Show, a Showcase television special with a live audience hosted by Lost Girl writer Steve Cochrane, preceded the broadcast of the final episode of Season 2 on April 1, 2012. Held on the set of the Dal Riata, the program featured in-person interviews with Anna Silk, Kris Holden-Ried, Ksenia Solo, Zoie Palmer, K.C. Collins, Rick Howland, and Paul Amos; and included behind the scenes footage, and questions from the audience.[46]

Lost Girl ConFAEdential preceded the premiere of Season 3 on January 6, 2013. Moderated by Executive Producer Jay Firestone, the program featured a roundtable discussion about the previous two seasons with (in order of introduction) Rick Howland, Zoie Palmer, Anna Silk, Kris Holden-Ried, Ksenia Solo, and K.C. Collins.[59]

Lost Girl: An Evening at the Clubhouse preceded the premiere of Season 4 on November 10, 2013. The special featured cast-on-cast interviews with Anna Silk, Kris Holden-Ried, Ksenia Solo, Zoie Palmer, Rick Howland, K.C. Collins, Paul Amos, and Rachel Skarsten; behind-the-scenes stories, exclusive webisode footage, a sneak peek of the new season, and responses to questions from fans.[79]

These Lost Girl television specials aired only on Showcase and were not broadcast outside of Canada.

International production

On February 13, 2013, Sony Pictures Television (SPT) announced that Russian television channel TV-3 had commissioned 24 episodes of Lost Girl. The Russian-language version of the series was to be produced in Moscow by SPT local production company "Lean-M".[123]

Showcase sequence vs. Syfy opening credits

Episodes aired in the United States on Syfy are reduced from their original 44:00 minutes to allow more time for commercial advertisement.

When asked about the difference between the show seen on Syfy (U.S.) versus Showcase (Canada), executive producer Jay Firestone responded that 90 seconds were cut from the episodes, and he was involved in deciding which edits to make.[124]

Starting with Season 3, Syfy replaced the original opening title sequence of main cast names, series creator, show title, Anna Silk's voiceover, and series theme song, with opening credits superimposed over footage of the first scene; thus sparing 30 seconds that would have otherwise been cut from each episode.

Editing of Bo and Lauren scenes for Syfy (U.S.) episodes

203 Bo & Lauren deleted scene (USA) Scream a Little Dream

2.03 "Scream a Little Dream"
Deleted scene from Syfy (U.S.) episode

In Season 2, the decision to cut an emotive scene between Bo and Lauren from Scream a Little Dream created controversy among LGBT fans of the show, resulting in the network being accused of insensitivity and censorship. Lost Girl producers responded to the backlash by issuing a public statement on the show's Facebook page explaining that the edits were done in-house, and not by Syfy, for "timing and not content."[125]

As noted by Dorothy Snarker writing for AfterEllen: "With so little representation of gay relationships on TV, every little touch matters."[126]

After this experience, Syfy (U.S.) episodes had opening credits superimposed over the beginning of the first scene; salvaging :30 seconds from being deleted elsewhere in the episodes.

In Season 4, the deletion of eight sentences (:50 seconds) of dialogue between Bo and Lauren from their last scene together in Dark Horse, the season finale episode, resulted in protests by many fans because a pivotal moment between the two same-sex lovers was eliminated: Lauren told Bo that she belonged to her ( "I'm yours." ).[127]

How this scene was edited [128][129] led to the creation of a petition on Change.org asking Syfy (U.S.) to consider how the deletion of decisive dialogue between Bo and Lauren created a different perception among American audiences of Lauren's motivations towards Bo and of their romantic relationship.[130]

As editors of the blog "PIXEL 51 - STIMULI" pointed out: imagine what the effect would be if the "We'll always have Paris." dialogue between Rick and Ilsa in "Casablanca" were to be deleted.[131]

[ See Team Lauren article for more information about the cutting of Bo and Lauren scenes in episodes edited for Syfy (U.S.) ]

Freedom To Love Necklace

On April 11, 2014, a limited edition replica of the necklace and pendant gift from Lauren that Bo found in Turn to Stone and wore in Dark Horse was made available for a limited time.[133] Designed by Prodigy Pictures, the pendant of the sterling silver "Freedom To Love Necklace" was based on the Labrys,[134] a double-headed axe symbol originally associated with the goddess worship of the Minoan civilization[135] and adopted in the 1970s by the lesbian-feminist movement as a symbol representing feminist/warrior, and by the women's spirituality movement.[136][137]

Lost Girl Series (the official twitter of Lost Girl), Anna Silk and Zoie Palmer responded with tweets thanking fans for the donation generated from the necklace.[141][142][143]
